Xin chào!
Well, we promised that we'd write again soon and here we are! To pick up from our last message, we left beautiful and relaxed Mui Ne and travelled a few hours North to Nha Trang. This is another beach town but much bigger than Mui Ne and a lot, lot more touristy. We saw a couple of sights there but mainly chilled out by the sea and went snorkelling. The snorkelling trip there was our best yet as the water was incredibly clear and we saw the most amazing variety of neon coloured fish.
We also hired a motorbike one day and rode to a beach that the locals go to. The sand wasn't as clean as some of the tourist beaches but the water was really beautiful and completely crystal clear. We also happened across some of our freshest seafood yet. The only places to eat were shacks right on the beach where we (struggled) to order seafood by the kilo. After quite a bit of finger pointing and mime, Nicky finally picked out the prawns he wanted from a tank of lives ones. Moments the prawns arrived at our table, skewered, marinated and ready for the little BBQ grill that accompanied them. A complete experience!!
We moved from Nha Trang on an overnight sleeper bus to Hoi An. The bus was fine but there wasn't a lot of sleeping going on as the driving was bit crazy. Hoi An was a total change from anywhere we'd been so far in Vietnam. The town is a UNESCO world heritage site and so the buildings have been maintained and restored really nicely. The buildings are an interesting mix of typical Chinese style with swooping roofs and dragons, but with an elegant French-colonial feel. Plus, the town is situated on a slow moving river and has a very beautiful Japanese bridge.
Hoi An is renowned for its tailoring and its silk lanterns, both of which dominate every single street. There's over 400 tailors and it's known to be the best place in Vietnam to have clothes made. So, we took advantage!! Six dresses, 2 pairs of trousers, 2 shirts, 2 coats and a kimono later, we're still struggling to fit things into our packs and carry them!
The food in Hoi An was really excellent, probably some of the best that we've had in Vietnam which is really saying something because we've eaten spectacularly well here.
We've just arrived in Hue and only have less than a week left before we fly to Malaysia. We will be very sad to leave but know that we'll be back to visit Vietnam again soon.
Here are our latest pictures from Nha Trang and Hoi An. We'll be in touch again soon.
