Today we went to the Waimangu Thermal Valley, just south of Rotorua. The whole area is known for its thermal activity but it is all quite expensive so we chose just one to visit. The sights were pretty amazing. There was a 2 hour walk along a set path for us to follow with various sights along the way. The main attractions were Emerald Pool, the Inferno Crater and the hot mud flats. Emerald pool was a vast lake with constant steam rising out of it. The surrounding cliffs also were full of blow holes with hot steam jetting out at regular intervals. The water, in places, was literally boiling over, and having stuck my finger in a couple of times I can say that it hurt a lot. Inferno crater was another lake, this time much smaller and as blue as the sky. The mud flats were vast areas of steaming orange sand and mud. The photos are pretty good (unfortunately not up yet...keep a look out) and I highly recommend anyone who comes here must visit at least one of these valleys. We stopped of for a full english breakfast and a bottomless coffee in the cafe at the end.
That evening we checked into a top 10 holiday park for showers, internet, a large inflatable pillow the size of a small football pitch and a heated swimming pool. There was also a hot tub - not bad for a tenner. We recharged our batteries and cooked a curry ready for the next day - our sky dive over Lake Taupo.
