Hi Guys
Time is rather confusing me these days, I am not totally sure when everything happened over the last few days. On Monday 31st Tom and I made the trip over to Auckland, everything went smoothly and this time my bag arrived safely!! As soon as we landed, we saw John and Joel waiting for us, having landed 2 hours previously from Chile. The time was 6am and we grapped a taxi to our youth hostel near downtown Auckland. It was just off a road called K Road, which we later found to be the red light district. The hostel gave off the impression of being slightly odd the moment we walked through the door but more on that in a bit.
We walked into downtown and explored. It started to rain really heavily so we finally deciding to go to the aquarium, which was a fun few hours. We had been up for roughly 35 hours at this point so we headed back to the hostel and slept pretty early.
The hostel, we decided, was a safe house for Sri Lankan illegal immigrants. The place was over crowded with them, and apparantly they had been living there for 14 months and were looking for work. Also, someone told us the owner smuggled them in to the country, so in exchange they stayed there. There was also a father and son living there, in a dorm with everyone else which isn't supposed to happen in a backpackers hostel. Anyway, the beds were ok so it did the job.
Our second day in Auckland was a much better one. We took a ferry out to an island called Waiheke island, about 10 miles of the coast. Its a beautiful, very quiet place and we caught a bus out to a beach with beautiful white sand and no one around. We stayed here for 4-5 hours, played footy, sunbathed and found a small cafe for a beer.
That night we tried out Auckland nightlife, which turned out to be a bad evening as we didn't know where to go. Still, some fun was had. The following morning we picked up the campervan, went to a supermarket for essentials and headed north to the Bay of Islands. Unfortunately, 10 minutes into having the van, one of us had a minor prang with another car. The damage was just paintwork, but still a shock. Glad it happened early, as we all said - it was going to happen eventually.
