Hey everyone!
Wow, what can I say? This trip has been so much fun, and its only day 3! The flight went very well. Chicago to London is only a 6 hour flight, and I watched movies and drank free wine the entire time (as not to increase my jet-lag). London-Heathrow airport was very interesting. The staff for British Airways in the airport was not very helpful, but we did manage to find one person that actually could tell us the right place to go to get a bus Oxford (about 50 mi away from London). The bus driver was a grumpy old bloke who almost ran over 2 bicyclists, and almost caused countless other accidents. He averaged about a foot of space behind cars....made my driving look amazing!
The city of Oxford is gorgeous! The University was founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1507, but has origins to the 9th century! The city is very eclectic and the people are hilarious. When we got to Jesus College (Oxford has 50+ colleges) I was amazed at the history of this place- its scenery is amazing. I havent taken that many pictures of the University yet, but I will when we go on our official tour Wednesday. Our professors our hilarious. Dr. Holmes is fantastic and has been a great wealth of knowledge about British culture and customs. We talked Nebraska football, which was a definite reminder of home (cough cough Aug 30th cough cough) . He is coming back for the 20 year reunion of the Nebraska at Oxford program this Sept. 13th, and will be attending another Husker game. Dr. Horsewood is very interesting as well, although he loves to cheap shot his students, myself mainly, during the middle of class. The best part of the experience was getting to learn about the professors...at the bar inside Jesus College! It was definitely different than Lincoln in that respect. Our group bonded extremely fast, especially Sunday. Everyone is very nice and has had a blast together! 10 minutes after meeting my roommate, we went to the bar and had a pitcher before orientation. :) The bars, as I expected, are where the social scene is at here. Yesterday we walked around for awhile and saw this Jamaican bar, The Hi-Lo, and had a Red-Stripe with the owner, who was a Jamaican Citizen, but lived in Oxford. Our favorite place to hang out at is the Old Black Horse pub! The bartender is hilarious and was really fun to be around. He gave us a couple free drinks and had a couple with us after his shift was over. After our adventure at the Old Black Horse we went to A Mid-Summer Night's Dream on the green. It was absolutely hilarious, and was a walking play (they had different sets in different parts of the park and when they changed scenes we walked with the actors.) That was a heck of a time!
Today will be another random day!
Cheerio!
