SMOKE ME A KIPPER - I'LL BE BACK FOR BREAKFAST
Ok so I met up with Selina in Kuala Lumpar where we did a 2 week tour of Malaysia......
We visited an old city called Melaka, The Oldest rainforest in the world: Taman Negara, the beautiful Perhentian Islands, & spent 2 nights at a home stay in???? Also spent some time in Kuala Lumpar at both the beginning and end of the tour.....
Kuala Lumpar:
In Kuala Lumpar we visited the Petronas twin towers which are really cool.... did the trip up to the sky lodge part which was only half way up the towers but was still cool. We also went to the Lake gardens, and went up the KL tower which gave the views over the whole city.... can't remember how high up it is off-hand! Spent some time in the china town and central markets' with people trying to sell you a lot of crap all the time... even though I still got forced into buying some pointless things- I'm too weak!
KL was much nicer then I thought it would be and a definite step up from Bangkok although I wasn't liking the lack of normal breakfast options.... just couldn't hack a spicy curry at 8am!!! But did find a food called roty which was nice!!!
Anyway so we met the group on the Friday and it was a little bit of a shock.....
So since the tour I did in America 2 years ago was so good I was looking forward to more of the same this time round. So its time to go and meet our group..... we get there and not only is there only 6 people in the group.... there is a 65 year old American couple, another 65 year old fat singleton from new Zealand and a 30 yr old Irish girl who ended up been really annoying!!! I couldn't believe it....... What the f***! Me and Selina got the giggles straight away and could look at each other for the whole meeting! It turned out ok as the tour was really good and we got to see and do a lot of things.... it just could have been a little better had there been people our own age on the tour.
Melaka:
So after KL we travelled by coach to an old traditional city called Melaka. It's a city that's been occupied by Portuguese, Dutch and English so there were a lot of different influences upon the city and I guess their way of life... apparently they loved queen Victoria. It was a really interesting city..... we saw the ruins of St Pauls church, a beauty museum which was slightly disgusting and showed different cultures' obsessions with mutilating themselves in order to look good.... if only they had come to me first I could have told them: "No you look f***ing disgusting" lol! I will post some pics I took- in fact one guy looks like hairy!!! Funny! Oh yeah we also did a trishaw tour where these guys took us around various places in the city on a bike with the passenger compartment having been decorated with millions of flowers etc- apparently mine and Selina's had won a competition- how special! (See pics)
Oh I almost forgot- so on one part on this trishaw tour we stopped somewhere where these guys were wearing these massive snakes with which you could take a photo with. So Selina wanted to have me hold this snake for a photo so I thought what the hell: never had a snake rapped round my head before- I'll go for it. This guy puts this snake over my shoulders and tells me to hold this certain part of the snake so it stays looking away from me- this made me a little nervous........ While Selina was taking a century to take a picture this "muscle" snake was trying to turn its head towards me and the guy had to keep running over and correct the snakes head. I started to think that I would feel a lot safer if I was doing this in England or America because you know it will be relatively safe...... whereas in comparison I was in some semi 3rd world country where they could have, for all I know, just found this snake in the woods and are now seeing how many photos/money they can get before it turns its head enough to launch its fangs into my neck (I had the scene in road trip in mind)!!! Selina took about 10 years to take a photo as she wasn't sure if i would like it..... by then i couldn't give a fcuk!!!
Taman Negara:
So next stop was a very old rainforest and to get there took around 10 hrs of traveling by cab/train and boat. The train was really dodgy and very very dirty..... I subsequently got an eye infection from this that lasted a week just because I put a contact lens on the train....... My eye swelled up etc
So in the rainforest we did some hiking, canopy walks which were really high up, visited a tribe, swam in some rapids etc etc.
Hiking was funny as there were quite a lot of leech's around and I thought they might scare Selina but they didn't really... one guy got about 6 on him! Although I never knew that cats could be so frightening Selina! She crapped herself every time a cat came near us???? I guess some of them had no tails and were foaming out the mouth but they were still harmless I think lol!
The tribe were still living a traditional life and basically living off the land. They showed us how they made and hunted with the blow pipe. I got to have a go at shooting this thing at a target- I was crap...... Selina was worse- surprising since all the practice girls get? It might still be the traditional life but I definitely saw signs that some of the tribe had been sampling some modern ways. For instance there was a lot of rubbish chucked behind one of the huts.... Including some take away boxes where they had obviously taken some trips down the river to stuff their faces with burgers and fries before returning home to sample a spider leg with leaves.
We were meant to stay in a hyde (sort of camping grounds) in the middle of the jungle for one of the nights but previous groups had hated it so much that we never got to go...... Apparently they got attacked by these massive rats all night- they would bite people through their sleeping bags etc... its sounds horrible but the thought of seeing how Selina would deal with the situation made me really want to go but the rest of the group didn't- def would have been funny... I don't think Selina was amused....
Perhentian Islands:
This place reminded me of Koh Pan Ngan but without the night life so was far more chilled and really beautiful. The water bright blue and the sand bright white and not too many people about which was nice. The place we stayed had amazing food and I think I'm starting to get a little fat now since I haven't done any exercise for a whole month.
We spent a lot of time on the beach, swimming, Snorkeling, and one of the days I went Scuba diving- it was amazing!!! Didn't think I would like it as much as I did and now can't wait to do my course in Australia!
Home stay:
So this last part of our tour we stayed with a typical Malay family and experienced some of the Malay traditions and foods. I say typical Malay but no way... this guy had the nicest home on a little island and his wife cooked us really great food every meal... they both spoke really good English and had 2 speed boats etc..... def not typical! They were called Azziz, Azzia and there son was called Azzam- u see the pattern? But nonetheless it was really great- we sampled traditional Malay foods, learnt about some of the cultures and again just chilled. One of the days we did a short hike to a waterfall and afterwards had tea at some villager's house which seemed slightly random. That night we had a fully tradition Malay meal. We all wore Sarongs and sat on the floor and had to eat everything with our right hand which was slightly messy (left hand was for something else- and no I wasn't that traditional).
After the home stay we returned to KL and had our farewell dinner with the group.... The group wasn't actually as bad as I make out... I really liked the American couple- the guy named Andy had some really cool stories from the Vietnam war and some random trivia ques were quite interesting..... He seemed to think it was important for Selina to keep an eye on me in the future- not sure exactly why???
Anyway on the 15th me and Selina left KL for Singapore. We took a train that was meant to take 7hrs but took 9.... It was the slowest piece of crap ever and the air-con must have been set at 0 degrees because I was almost a snowman by the end of it! Will write about Singapore a little later as my eyes hurt now!
I have prob been a bit random- the photos will tell a better story once I load them..... in a bit!
