Ben and Hailey were our guides for the day, and we fitted in lots of touristy things...
First up was a visit to the Yarra Valley, a region famous for it's large number of vinyards and wineries. In theory, a very nice idea. However, after a few 'bevies' the night before it was harder work than we anticipated. We went to a fantastic farmers market with masses of locally produced scrumptious food and organic meat, cheese, nibbles etc etc. Nick could barely contain himself with excitement at all the stalls giving away free tasters of their products.
Full tummy, happy Lamby.
Then we went on to the 'Yerring Station' winery. Sampled a huge range of excellent sparkling, white, rose, red and port wines. (tummy not feeling as good now...) Ben tried to act as the expert given his family's history of wine-making, but obviously not all that knowledge has been passed down. Came away with a bottle of delicious 'Sangiovese' wine and the four of us managed to polish it off that evening with a Spag Bog - perfect.
Then it was on to Healisville Sanctuary. Zoe was very excited about seeing some real Aussie wildlife up close. The best until then was a glimpse of a Kangaroo out of a coach window and loads of flies. We weren't disappointed!
As well as annoying the guides there by splattering them with sand (!!), we saw Kangaroos, Koalas, Wallabys, Platypuses, Emu, Birds, Fish, Lizards, Spides, Dragons, Snakes and lots of others. The highlight was a 'Birds of Prey' show, in which several massive eagles and ospreys flew in and around the crowd. Amazing creatures, especially when they touch you on the head as they swoop past.
Despite Ben's best efforts, we avoided the Brewery and went home for some lovely food and drink.
All in all another excellent 'exploring' day down under!
