We crossed back to Argentina and headed to El Calafate, a pretty town set on the edge of a lake with snow-capped mountains in the background. Our second night there had us sampling more yummy red wine, followed by salsa dancing with the locals until 4am. Neither of us know how to salsa, but they don´t take no for an answer, so we just shuffled our feet and got lead around the crowded dance floor. The highlight of our stay was a day trip to the amazing Glaciar Perito Moreno, which is one of the only glaciers in the world that is advancing. De drove us there and back in a car we hired for the day, and she managed to keep on the right side of the road the whole time (pretty good considering she hasn´t driven a car in 8 months!). We also attended our first Asado (Argentinian BBQ) at the hostel we were staying at, which consisted of a massive slab of meat cooked on a grill over hot coals and then plonked in the middle of the table for us to grab chunks of and make steak sandwiches. Nic was estatic with the abundance of meat, while de had to make do with a humble potato ... they really don´t understand why anyone would want to be a vegetarian.
From El Calafate we headed a few hours north to El Chalten, a small town located inside the Los Glaciares National Park, known as the climbing capital of Argentina. We spent 4 days hiking in the park and were rewarded with sensational weather every day, so we had spectacular views of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre (previous to us arriving the area was covered in cloud for over a month!). On day 3 of our hike, four cute & very fit firemen from the Canary Islands (Spain) set up tent next to us and introduced themselves with a customary hug & double kiss. Unfortunately we hadn´t showered for 4 days, so weren´t smelling our freshest, but that didn´t stop them from offering us tea, snacks and conversation (and fire control if necessary, as de´s cooker gives off a pretty big flame at times). It was great to hike in such gorgeous surroundings and seeing incredible glaciers, icebergs, lakes, rivers, massive boulders, beautiful flowers and butterflies. The more time we spend in Argentina the more we fall in love with this beautiful country!
