We again travelled by bus to Sukothai in the north of Thailand. If you are going on long distances on the buses you get a food token with your ticket and you stop half way and get a Thai dinner, its basically like a big school canteen. We were the only western people on the bus and it was quite hard communicating with the bus staff, I spent the whole time quite confused and had to guess what they were telling me from sign language practically. Half way through the journey the bus attendant beckoned me to follow her and was chatting to me in Thai (which I obviously didn't understand) turned out she wanted me to take my bags from the bag compartment on the side of the bus and take them up onto the bus and put them on the free seats. Not really sure why but a lot of other passengers did it too, so we assumed that on that route people try and steal the bags when the bus stops at traffic lights, as we had heard a lot about this. By the end of the journey every passenger knew exactly where we were going, and they were all trying to help us, every time the bus stopped we looked around and asked "Sukothai??" and we would half stand up and they would all say "no, no, next one" but we made it safe and sound!Sukothai is also a UNESCO world heritage site but it's a lot bigger than Ayuthaya. There is loads of flooding here too. We went to the heritage site today, and we hired bikes again. Although at the end my chain came off and it was covered over with a metal case so we couldn't even try and put it back on, so I held on to Chris's bike and he towed me around for the last bit of the journey! ( we must of looked like complete weirdos!) There were loads of old temple ruins here, and there were a lot of huge Buddha sculptures from many centuries ago, they were really impressive, and we saw a sculpture of a standing Buddha which we have not seen anywhere else before, as there are only a few certain poses that Buddha is seen in and all of them have specific names. There is some Indian culture in Sukothai , Hindu gods can be seen in some of the temples, which is nice to see after having been to India. Sukothai was also once the capital, a lot of the temple ruins are from the 14th and 15th Century.
