We spent our last few days in Thailand back in Bangkok. There were quite a few things we didn't get to do last time we were here. We spent the first day in China town exploring all the markets and trying out the food on the street stalls. We went to a Chinese style temple. The Buddha images they have there are completely different to the typical Thai Style. In one area you could not enter unless you were wearing all white. I think there was some sort of religious festival on, as there was a huge paper made dragon outside and lots of children were holding it up and music was playing. We got the ferry back and there were loads of people on the pier all dressed in white, praying and burning incense and they set free a cage full of birds. Yesterday we went to see the reclining Buddha which is in Wat Pho. It is a huge golden sculpture of Buddha lying down depicting him entering nirvana (his death). I really wasn't expecting it to be as big as it was. It was 15m high and 46m long! Well worth a look, although on the way over there one Thai guy told us it was "shut until 3pm" which was a lie. Chris got his picture taken with a python, I was too scared to hold it. Today I went to the National Gallery, the modern Art was the best for me. Some really good paintings and sculptures. Chris got a Thai massage today, which wasn't too painful for him. They aren't the most relaxing as they aim to actually heal any back problems rather than to be enjoyable. After my massage experience in Japan which left me in more pain than before I started, I decided to give the massage a miss. Its a lot harder now coming back to Bangkok and dealing with the heat as it was so much cooler in the north. We are going to Vietnam tomorrow and we are really looking forward to it. We have been in Thailand for a month, and have had a fantastic time. We are glad that we have seen a bit of everything here- the beaches, historical sights, the big cities and been up the mountains. The Thai people are really friendly and really quite amazing, if you think you couldn't carry 5 stacks of eggs on a moped you'd be wrong as the Thai's can do it without a single crack. They can fit 3 kids and an adult on a moped! I've seen newborn babies to toddlers some barely able to hold their heads balancing on the front of a moped, their tiny little arms stretched out to hold onto anything they can find, while their mother drives. Bangkok has been good fun, it is so diverse, it must be one of the few places you can hear prayers being sung from a mosque in the early hours of the morning, visit temples and see monks during the day, then see a "ping pong show" by night (don't ask) and get a McDonalds Delivery, all in one day!
