It was sad to say goodbye to Jaisalmer this morning as I have really enjoyed our short stay in the Golden City but today we travel to Jodhpur. As we were driving into out of we encountered lots of military vehicles on the road. This is because we are not too far from the border to Pakistan and there are also lots of military training camps in the area as well. We arrived in Jodhpur by mid afternoon and had a quick freshen up before heading for a tour of Meherangarh Fort. This fort was really impressive sitting on a 125 m high hill we actually caught a lift to the top. From the top of the fort we had sweeping views of this walled city and got to see why it is called the Blue City as the houses here are all painted blue. Apparently the Brahmans originally painted their houses blue to reflect the sky (closer to heaven) and their high status in society's caste system. The fort was a hive of activity with decorations going up all over the place in preparation of a party being held there on 6/11/12 hosted by Naomi Campbell for her boyfriends 50th birthday. The site was also the site of Liz Hurleys wedding some years ago.
The fort has some beautifully engraved stone work especially in the women's quarters where lattice work stone allowed the ladies to watch the goings on in the courtyard without being seen. The fort is also a museum and had lots of items on display showing the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Finishing at the fort we walked down to the clock tower and busy, colorful markets that were abuzz with people. We met back up with Suri here and had our first taste of a Lassi (yoghurt type drink) from a local shop that Siri reckons Makes the best in the region. Dinner tonight was at On the Rocks - nice local restaurant with a garden setting. Arriving back at our hotel the Shree Ram in time to purchase two pairs of lovely Indian style shoes for 250R each :)
