Today we had the whole day to explore Memphis. So we decided to start off at the National Civil Rights Museum.
They say to allow 1-1.5 hours to go through but Chris and I were in there for at least 2 hours and still feel like we could've stayed longer. The museum covered all things about the Blacks becoming equals with the Whites and coming from a country that treats all of its citizens equally Chris and i found the whole thing just eye opening and moving - what it must've been like to grow up in the time...
Anyway the museum went over the Slaves being brought over from Africa, the trades and what was expected of slaves to do in a day, the slaves fighting for their freedom, Rosa Parks fighting for equality, the sit ins, marches and also the whole thing was set in the old Lorraine Motel which is where Dr Martin Luther King spent his last days and was shot. They have kept rooms the same so you can see everything as well as being able to see the balcony where he was shot - it was very powerful.
Afterwards we decided to take a walk to Beale street which was like a mini New Orleans. Very cool but a lot of rubbish and bad smells lol.
At night time our Airbnb hosts told us about a free Jazz and Blues concert just down the road at the Lavett Shell, walking distance to where we were staying. We decided to go check it out and it was very cool. This was opening night and they do 50 free concerts every Thurs-Sun nights through summer. The band was great as was the atmosphere but Chris and I wanted to try out the famous Memphis pizza so we left after an hour and found the Memphis Pizza Cafe. This cafe has been voted the best pizza in Memphis and man was it good!! A great way to end our stay in Memphis.
