We arrived in Sydney yesterday to 29 degrees and lots of sun - lovely! We spent the afternoon walking around the botanical gardens and went to Macquarries Point. We had ice cream which melted faster than we could eat whilst looking at the opera house and Harbour Bridge. Really good way to spend the afternoon.
In the evening we met up with Murray who we met in Darwin on the Kakadu tour. We went out to the bars, they have a bar in the centre which is completely outside. This was really nice until it decided to thunder and absolutely pour down!!
Today we have seen the shops, there are some real bargains here! But then it has rained again!!! Meeting mum, dad and Rebecca shortly - they've brought the weather with them!!
Since meeting my parents we have done a lot of sightseeing!! We stayed in an apartment overlooking Darling Harbour which was lovely. As we were so close we spent a lot of time around that area - bars, restaurants and then just pottering around in the day.
We also climbed the Sydeny Harbour Bridge at night time. I was quite nervous about this and very nearly didn't do it! It was really good though and I am glad that we did it. The view was amazing and it was so nice at night time with all of the lights. We went up the pylon in the day, so it was a good contrast.
The next day we went to The Rocks, which is where the first settlement in Sydney was. This has obviously been done up recently, so there were bars, cafes and a arts and crafts style market to walk round. We also went to Susannah place which were 4 historical terraces. However, the Oz version of refurbished houses in a particular period is a bit different to the British!!
We spent Monday on Bondi beach with my sister Rebecca, whilst mum and dad went to Penant Hills in the suburbs. Bondi is being redeveloped at the moment and it will look good when its done. The beach is lovely and the sea is so clear (again!!). It is more crowded than the other beaches in Oz but it was fine for us!! We went into the sea and the waves are so big! The push and pull you all over the place - it was good fun!!
Then on tuesday we were supposed to have surfing lessons at Manly beach (dad's birthday present from Neil and I) but the sea was too calm! This was a contrast to Bondi. We spent the day relaxing on the beach and swimming in the sea instead. This was good still, just a bit disappointing especially as it was meant to be dad's present. We will have to sort it out for somewhere in UK instead.
We went to Watsons Bay as well, the view from here back over the city was amazing and so clear. We walked around here to the Gap and a suspension Bridge. This suburb was a very pretty and quaint place. We have chips from Doyles cafe - yum!!! The sea looked very inviting here and we really wanted to swim!
Today we went out for brunch at Darling Harbour and then waved parents and Rebecca off. We went to a Sounds of the Outback show, which was very good. The didjeridoo was explained and played for us. then we went to an outdoor photographic exhibition, this had senic photos from all over the world.
We managed to go surfing on Friday, although the waves were a bit too big for beginners apparently! We had 2 hours in the sea and it was such hard work on your upper body. It was really good fun, but I was swept off the board and under the waves a few times - looked like a drowned rat at the end!! I managed to kneel on the board and nearly stand up. Neil stood up for a couple of seconds before falling off. We would both like to have another go at some point. My arms and upper body aches so much now and so does Neil's!!!
Today (Sunday) we went to a festival in Waterloo, which had makret stalls, food, galleries, kive bands and DJs. This was good fun and some of the bands were good. Most of them were Aussie bands and we weren't sure who they were but we enjoyed. Neil's happy that he has been to a festival this year now!!
Tomorrow, we leave Oz and we're quite upset about that, but we'll make the most of Thailand though!!!! We're not sure how often we will be able to access the internet so just in case - see you in 2 weeks.
