Our next stop after Santiago was Valdivia, a scenic town in Chile. We had read some good things about this place and wanted to see more of Chile so made a decision to stay there for two nights.
First impressions were good - it felt like a holiday town, but wasn't too over run with tourists (a good thing). The first thing we did when we arrived was go down to the river front. This was a great decision, as there was a lot on down there - boats, a huge fish market and SEA LIONS!! We had read in the book that sea lions were in the river close to the fish market, but we had to see it to believe it! It was amazing seeing these beasts in their natural habitat looking so content with the world! We obviously took some photos (probably a little too many!) and wondered around some more. Our hostel was small and friendly and we felt very at home.
We decided to take a boat tour the next day which took us around all of the 7 rivers in the region. We got to see the Spanish forts from the 19th century and learnt about the huge earthquake (9.5 on the richter scale) in 1960 that made Valdivia what it is today. It was an amazing trip!
On our final evening we went to the Kunstmann brewery - Valdivia has some german influence in the region and this was quite evident with many german tourists and our taxi driver even spoke to me in German! The Brewery was awesome...it was a restaurant, bar, museum come brewery! Unfortunately we didn't bring the camera for the ocassion and missed some great snaps. The food there was delish and it was great tasting some different beers! ;o)
Ps. You might notice some photos of the name prat...this was very popular in Valdivia and had to be taken a photo of! hehe.
