Tasha on her travels
wooooooooooooooooooo! today was another extreme day!! me and amy (rhia busy doing applications) decided to do a nice glacier \'walk\' we were persuaded by the hostel that the 1/2 day option was \'crap\' and we just had to had to do the full day, will we cope with it, is it too harcore??...no he said.... well lets just say glacier \'walking\' or should i say climbing is EXTREME! we hade a very early start to the day and got decked out in loadsa layers inc. huge huge boots, talons (ice gripper type things) and waterproofs, by the end of it we looked like we weighed 15 stone we had so much on. so we got the coach down their (10mins) and began our day. our guide walked at a speed of about 30 mph and me and amy were running behind out of breath, big uncomfy boots, having to run, def inately reminding me of TA, not good!!
then we saw the glacier, wow! helicopters kept whizzing by (the more expensive option) and we got split into 3 groups and began our climb up.i was gripping the ice by the tip of my finger nails at one point!
so this went on for about 6 hours and 14km! there were many occasions where i made my peace with god. seriously it was crazy sooo good but scared the hell out of me! we squuezed through cravises ( i got my bum stuck) and some of them we were literally nose against the ice and shimmering down sideways! so good. then the fear set in as i had to jump over several creveses. this is definately not a natural thing to do, jumop over a huige gap from a tiny platform where the landing bit is not big enough to fit your foot and it is ...well icy! did this a few times and the worst one was on way down where we had to jump about 1 1/2 metres over the crevasse onto a ledge which only fitted our toes, holding onto the ice to avoid falling to a probable imminent death! it took me a bit of persuading but i did it and was very proud of myself! i was petrified!! do that was about it, were absolutely knackered now, it was a beautiful sunny day and i was dressed as an eskimo with sunglasses on ski style!! go to google and look up franz josef glacier to see it,got pics but dont do it justice and most of the time we were terrifed to get camera out we were grippingonto ice so much!!! miss you lots, not long now! currently busy tryig to get tickets for ireland v new zealand in auckland, happy days! cheers mum and dad for sky dive!! im looking at doing it soon as poss as apparently taupo had lots of bad weather at mo and everyon i have met has had it put off...watch this space!! love xxx
