Had my 8 days in hawaii and managed to keep off the internet for a week hence the lack of blog activity. It was a relaxing time for the most part and i got around most of the island but it wasnt as good as i thought it would be.
The hostel i stayed in was the worst i have been to so far, wires hanging from the celling, mattres was u shaped, shower was like a fire hose etc.. The one good thing about the hostel was that it was pretty good for meeting people and there were a lot of cool people staying there as well as a few very strange ones!
As for Waikiki if anyone ever visits hawaii i would say waikiki is the place to avoid, there are no good bars that i found, there are loads of strange and dodgy people there and the beach is totally over rated with loads of tourists on it.
I spent most of my time travelling on the bus to get out of waikiki, firstly i went to North Shore which is at the other side of the island and it was great, big waves, nice beaches and not overcrowded. I also went Snorkling at Hanauma Bay which cost $5 but was a bargain, there is a really nice beach there and there is a coral reef that you go snorkling in and there are loads of fish and even a giant tortoise.
I also went up Diamond Head crater which was quite a steep climb but you do get a good panoramic view of waikiki from the top. I managed to do a shark dive in North Shore and that was a unique experiance, there were loads of sharks in the water and when i was getting drowned by the waves or slammed into the cage you get a great view of them.
The nightlife in waikiki had to be one of the most dissapointing things, on the first night me and two auzzie guys hunted round waikiki for a good bar and after visiting several we didnt find one. We did managed to find 50cent beer and a bikkini contest but the bars were pretty poor. On my second last night i did find one good club but it still wasnt great.
For my last two nights in Waikiki i had booked into a hotel and found out that it actually wasnt open for another 2 weeks. They did however book me into the Hilton Hawaiian Village instead so i got to stay in the hilton for 2 nights and the hotel was pretty good.
My last night in hawaii though was defintley the worst, the hilton started it by trying to charge me twice for the hotel room (they have now charged me for the mini bar even although it was locked and i could have drank anything from it if i wanted to!) then i was supposed to get picked up by an airport shuttle that was paid for but they didnt turn up so i had to get a taxi for $40. I also had a crap time at the airport (taxi dropped me off at the wrong place and people in the airport were not helpful in answering any questions about which terminal i should be at!) Then after my flight and waiting 30 min for my bag to come through i got into a taxi for my hostel in San Fran and got charged $55 for a trip that should be $25!
I also had a swiming with dolphins trip cancelled a couple of days before because they wanted me to pay for it twice! So overall it was probabley no better than an average time in hawaii for me, but i reckon some of the less busy islands would be worth visiting there.
