Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up this morning and decided to find a new hostel as I didn't particularly like Wake Up! and the people in my dorm were actually uisng that hostel to live in while they work in Sydney so that's not conducive to socialising, for example last night I came in at 8pm and found 3 people fast asleep in their beds!! Some of the guys have been living in the hostel for 6 months!
I collected my stuff and checked out, then in the overwhelming heat (35C) I walked with my rucksack down to another hostel called Base Backpackers in the CBD area. I'm no longer in a 10 dorm now it's 6 yippee! My room was also much cleaner and didn't smell quite so bad!
I finally got my haircut in a Japanese salon, it was quite funny the manager translated what I wanted done to the Japanese trainee and then she cut my hair. I was a little scared something might get "lost in translation" and I might come out with a Rod Stewart haircut (like the manager had) but it was fine!
After my haircut I got a wrap from a deli and then walked down to the Circular Quay ferry terminal and got on a ferry to Manly. It took around half an hour and then I relaxed on the beach for ages reading my Italian book. I went for a little swim in the cove and then dried off quickly under the warm sun (I burnt my neck though!!).
I got the ferry back to the city centre and then headed back to the hostel. When I returned to the hostel I found my Spanish book on the floor (precviously left on my bed) and a pink sarong on my pillow. My bed had been nicked I was furious; now I would be on a top bunk. Just then 2 women from Lincoln came in and I immediatley confronted them "Did you throw my book on the floor and nick my bed?". They said they hadn't and that it must have been the cleaners. It was actually quite funny as it broke the ice and then two Welsh dorm mates (Miles and Ally) came in and then we went out to an Italian restaurant "Macchiato"and I treated myself to a steak, fries and salad. It was really nice and worth paying $30 but from now on it's rice cakes.
We left the restaurant and walked back to the hostel as there was a toga party in the adjacent bar "Scary Canary". It was ok but not very lively so we headed along to the 3 monkeys and had a few drinks there before going to Scruffy Murphys Irish bar. We came home at 4am I was so tired but managed to have a debate with an Australian girl over the mistreatment of Aboriginals and the injustice that continues today...
