Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up before 11 and had watermelon followed by banana cake. My gang of Canadian friends who are: Crystal, Chelini, Charlynne, Mo and Amjit. They all have family originally from other countries: Phillipines, India, Fiji and India.
We decided to do the touristy thing today and see Christ and Sugar Loaf Mountain. We waited on Charlynne and Mo (who run on Fiji time). Eventually we walked over to their hotel and hurried them along. We got taxis to Christ and walked around the summit taking photos and enjoying the views. Our driver waited on us and then drove us to the base of Sugar Loaf Mountain where we got on a gondola which took us to the summit.
Unfortunately my camera batteries died at this point. The views of Copacabana and the city as a whole were fantastic. We sat and ate microwave pizzas at the top.
Later we walked around the shops in the Copacabana area and ate a really weird snack from a snack bar. It looks like a breadcrumbed pear but inside is lots of creamy cheese, fish and chicken. It actually tastes nice but isn't very healthy.
We returned to the hostel when it started to rain. I chatted to Nacho and then phoned my parents. I had drinks with my Canadian friends in the room. Charlynne had been recommended a restaurant in Ipanema. So we got a taxi to the Zaza bar. It was really expensive but the chicken curry was superb. The Argentinian Malbec wine we had was really good too. Also the waiter was really helpful and the girls gave him a big tip.
We then got taxis to a nearby hip-hop club in Leblon called Bombar. We had to queue for 20 minutes and wait on the MC to arrive. He eventually turned up; baggy trousers, open shirt but he was white. We entered the club, the girls got in for free but guys had to pay so I had to hand over 25 Reals..sexist eh. The club was quite nice inside and soon filled up but almost everyone was a tourist. I couldn't believe my eyes when Christian turned up and then the 2 English druggies arrived too!! We spoke to the MC who was an American from LA who speaks Portuguese. He said he's over here trying to be a South American "Eminem".
We danced on the throbbing dancefloor to hip hop and samba. It was really crowded and pretty sweaty. A few of us left the club early as it got a bit oppressive on the dancefloor with no room to move. We had a friendly taxi driver on the way back to the hostel who spoke English and chatted to us about Rio.
I spoke to Nacho for a while in the bar and then returned to my empty dorm now the French kids have left. I was exhausted but managed to drink water so my hangover tomorrow isn't bad.
