Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up early and spoke to a German guy called Jacob who is working in the hostel as a barman for a month. He asked if I wanted to go to the beach with him. I happily agreed and we set off for the busy Copacabana beach. We found some trustworthy locals to leave our stuff with such as towels, books, glasses. We then ran into the water diving through huge crashing waves. It was great fun! We then sunbathed on the beach for 2 hours people-watching. Almost all the girls were wearing little bikini tops and the guys wearing their small trunks.
We walked back to the hostel in time to watch the World Cup Final. Everyone including myself were supporting Italy and there was one solitary French couple. The match was good and everyone was shocked when Zidane butted the Italian player. The game went to penalties and Italy won: Forza Italia!! World Champions!
Just by coincidence my microwave meal was gnocchi and bolongnese. I met my dorm-mate Nacho from Argentina who is working for a nearby hostel as a chef. I celebrated the Italian victory with Nacho and Jacob. We drank caipirinhas at the bar. I put my name down for the samba funk party in the "city of god" favelas. A group of Canadian girls are also going. After an hour some Austrians and an Australian had joined the group.
We played cards and as Christian (the Aussie) got more drunk his personality became more bossy and obnoxious. I felt sorry for his sound friend James who is going to be travelling with this guy for a year. He never stosp whinging and is quite aggressive in his behaviour.
I played cards with Christian, Crystal (one of the Canadian girls with Filipino looks) Had (Israeli) and a Belgian guy from Antwerp. Christian was getting in a strop as he wasn't winning and was the only one taking it seriously. He took over the communal stereo and wouldn't let anyone play other music apart from his favourites Snow Patrol and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. He was so bloody annoying!
Suddenly our favela bus arrived and we were all bundled onboard. After a 25 minute drive we reached the favelas and were escorted into the club, given wristbands for the VIP area and taken up there. We weren't allowed to take our cameras as this is apparently where big Brazilian football stars come with their mistresses. So we were looking down from the VIP balcony on a heaving, sweaty mass of writhing Brazilians. The girls were all shaking their bums like only Brazilian girls can whilst the guys were taking off their shirts.
The beer was really cheap but didn't taste great. However Crystal bought a bucket of ice, vodka and red bull and shared it with everyone which was nice of her! I danced with Crystal and we were right at the front of the club when these huge fireworks went off...great but bit of a fire hazard! I saw the two English druggies I'd met in Cusco; the backpacker trail is small! We got a taxi back to the hostel and I discovered some Israeli guy had shoved his rucksack on my top bunk and thrown my bag of clothes across the floor..what an eejit!
