Neil's Round the World Trip!
I woke up as someone starting watching MTV in the bar area. I smeared some grape jam on a roll and drank the free lime juice. I accompanied Katie to the sand dunes and we hired sandboards. It was baking hot by the time we arrived at the dunes.
It was really energy-sapping walking up to the top of the sand dunes but was fun sliding down. We were given candle wax which gives your board more speed when you slide downhill. We spent an hour dashing up dunes and then sliding down sometimes falling off! It was really good but sand is everywhere afterwards; hair, ears, eyes and mouth!
We were thirsty after an hour in the hot sunshine running up dunes so what better drink but coconut water. The bar gives you a green coconut with a straw pushed into it and it's so refreshing! We walked from the dunes to a beautiful lagoon beach and waited for a bus back to our hostel. We had a bite to eat on the beach and then well deserved showers. We packed our stuff as tonight we both leave but in different directions. We walked across the rickety wooden bridge for the last time and saw incredibly penguins and a sea turtle in the little sea inlet near our hostel.
We got a bus to Lagoa and then after waiting for a while at the Lagoa terminal realised we needed to get on another bus to Florianopolis City. However the bus was packed and we had to endure an uncomfortable bus ride standing with our backpacks on. We reached the main bus terminal after watching an unforgetable sunset, the sun sank into the mountains leaving a beautiful red and orange sky. I said goodbye to Katie as her bus left for Foz before my bus to Santos. I had a pizza in the greasy spoon restaurant upstairs and then boarded my bus.
I reflected on Florianopolis as the bus drove to the outer city perimeter. It's a lovely place with great beaches, bars, cafes and attractive girls. The people here love to exercise by going "footing" down by the lagoon or sea shore. There are so many girls in skimpy lycra outfits jogging around it's crazy at times. It's easy to see why lots of travellers get stuck here and spend longer time in this area than they first anticipated.
I remembered the menu in the fish restaurant which had 2 full pages detailing shrimp variations. It reminded me and Katie of Forrest Gump when his friend Bubba goes on about shrimp: buttered shrimp, grilled shrimp, pan-fried shrimp etc.
I didn't enjoy my night bus but managed to get some sleep albeit disturbed sleep. The bus rumbled on through the night northwards towards the coastal city of Santos where I would try and get a bus to Angra Dos Reis (gateway to Ilha Grande).
