Neil's Round the World Trip!
I woke up around 7ish as our bus stopped at a roadside cafe. I had some chocolate yoghurt and a can of sweet grape juice. We continued throughout the morning travelling north and reached Porto Alegre around 12 where we had a free buffet meal in a Japanese restaurant. It wasn't sushi but a range of cooked meats and pasta.
We continued driving towards Florianopolis and eventually arrived around 5pm. We walked into the terminal and waved away offers of hostels by hostel sales people (who rip you off). We bought our bus to leave on Friday night, I'm going to Sau Paulo via Santos and Katie is going to Foz do Iguaçu. It was getting dark so we got a taxi to the Backpackers hostel in Barra da Lagoa. We arrived and walked across the sandy beach and then a wooden rickety bridge which took us to the hostel.
We checked-in and spoke to some Irish lads in our dorm, Brian and Owen. One of the co-owners Tish who checked us in was stoned out of her face..it seems like the place for chilling out. We had a walk around the hostel which has a great view of the beach, hammocks, honesty policy (for internet and drinks you take them when you feel but are obliged to put money in the jar). It really tempted my dishonest streak but I didn't take advantage unlike in Sweden eh Monty!
There is a good atmosphere and a nice little bar serving caipirinhas! There were some other people in our cramped dorm: Danielle (Irish), Ryan from San Diego who we nicknamed `All American Heroe`and another American called Ivan who was later nicknamed `Ivan the Terrible`due to his snoring! An Australian surfer dude called Steve was also in our dorm and had been here for 2 weeks.
The Irish lads invited me and Katie to join them for dinner in the nearby town of Lagoa. We got a bus with them, Danielle and All American Heroe. We searched around for the Mexican restaurant that the Irish lads had been recommended. After some walking in circles we found El Mexicano and sat on an outside table in the balmy evening. We all ordered enchiladas and caipirinhas; delicious and the caipirinhas were fantastic!
There were lots of attractive Brazilian girls in stylish clothes sitting around us listening to the live entertainment. We left around 11 and got the last bus back to our hostel. Myself and Katie were knackered from our bus journey and headed to bed. While our new Irish friends hit the nearby bar called the Chill Out bar.
We were rudely awoken at 5am by Ivan the Terrible who began snoring so loudly! Everyone woke up and the Irish guys in our dorm shouted at him to shut up. However it made little difference as he continued his relentless snore onslaught. Eventually Owen decided he could stand no more and slept downstairs in the bar area. The Australian surfer dude got angry and walked over to Ivan poking him and screaming: "f***ing shut up man! People are trying to sleep!". However he kept up the snoring until 8am by which time we'd all got up for breakfast tired and exasperated.
