Just in another country for the weekend... easy peasy.
We had a weekend in Toronto. It was really nice. Myself, my German roommate, her French classmate and two Hong Kong friends hired a car and drove out Friday afternoon at 5pm to hit up Toronto.
We arrived around 10.30 and once settled in, hit up a bar down the road where I could finally buy my own alcohol again! It was the greatest feeling ever. You never know what you got until it's gone!
But then it came back to me again, yay!
On the Saturday we bought tickets on the Hop On Hop Off buses - a real touristy adventure. A double decker bus that takes you on a two hour tour of the city, to the best stops. It even stops off at the Harbour where we got onto a free boat ride tour around the Toronto Islands.
Did you know that there's about a 40-50 year wait to live on the Toronto Islands. You can visit them when you like of course. But there are 200 residents that live there, with a massive waitlist AND when you pass away, you can't put the estate in your will to pass onto your family. The house has to go back to the state to resell. Incredible!
Anyways, after our tour we went for lunch and I finally got an India dish - just Butter Chicken. But, there is no India Restaurant in Potsdam! I don't know how I will survive for the rest of the semester there. I haven't had any luck trying to find Indian cooking indgredients either.
Please send help.
We then went back onto the bus where we learnt some pretty cool things through the tour guide.
For one, no filming is allowed at Harvard University. So any movie set there is normally filmed in the Toronto University as they have a similar ambience. Apparently filming in Harvard 'distracts the students'.
Even then, many films that are set in New York City are actually filmed in Toronto, and even at the Dundas-Yonge Square - which is sometimes replaced for Times Square in films. This is because it is a lot cheaper to film there. Some of these films include Psycho, Good Will Hunting and the TV Show 'Suits'.
There was a distillery on our trip which was used in the filming of X-Men, when they open with the concentration camp scene, (this one right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI7SEIKaKwE) that was filmed at this location, called Gooderham and Worts Distillery.
I'm a huge fan of the show 'Suits' so I thought it was incredible to learn all those interesting facts.
We got off at the Dundas-Yonge Square and shopped for about an hour and then caught the bus back to our place for a rest and to get ready for dinner. We ate at a Chinese restaurant because our lovely companions were craving food styled from their home country and they too couldn't find a Chinese restaurant in Potsdam.
Then we went onto a rooftop bar where it was a forty-five minute wait in line, a $14 entry fee and then $9 margarita buckets - they were huge! We filled up on one of those. It was a lovely night. Toronto is absolutely beautiful.
The next day's adventure is off to Niagara Falls and let me tell you, the two extra hours it took to get there was definitely worth it!
