A Semester Overseas
I'm sorry I haven't updated in awhile! I've been very busy...On Friday, October 6th, Becky and I took a day trip after our classes to go to Bratislava in Slovakia. It was only an hour train ride and people like to go there for dinner and to shop because it is very cheap! We walked around the whole city which is very small so it didn't take too long. We went to the castle and the main square. We didn't take any tours or anything because we just wanted to sightsee on our own. Then we had an excellent dinner- I ate grilled goat cheese with ham and then chicken with pineapples and cream. The entire trip- including train tickets and food cost only 30 Euro! I added a photo album so check that out! I also added more pictures to the photo album "Karlsplatz" with the United Buddy Bears and I added the album "Kunsthistoriches & Maria Theresa Platz" from last weekend. We got back from Bratislava around 10pm on Friday and we went to bed because we were tired after all that traveling. On Saturday I went to a tennis match with my friends- (see photos) I've never been to a professional tennis match before so it was fun. Last Saturday was only preliminary round but this saturday famous people will be playing such as Andy Rodd*** and Andre Agassi. Unfortunately I will not be able to see them play because I am going to Salzburg this weekend! At night a festival was going on called "Lange Nacht der Museen". All the museums in Vienna were open until 1am and they were all free! I took advantage of it by going to the Albertina museum since that is the most expensive museum to go to and it is not included on my museum pass that I have- the Albertina museum is having a great Picasso exhibit going on now which was really cool to see.On Sunday I went to the Kunsthistoriches Museum to look around (see photos) and then I went to the opera "Peter Grimes" by Benjamin Britten which is one of my favorite operas so I was excited that they were playing it and it was very good. On Monday I went to the ballet "Coppelia" which is my favorite show I have seen here so far- it was amazing! I love ballet now. The next ballet they are doing is "Giselle" which I am excited to see too. On Tuesday the teachers at the highschool I am doing my teaching internship at invited me to play basketball with them every tuesday at 7pm. Yesterday was the first practice and it was a lot of fun. They invited me out to eat afterwards and then gave me a ride back to my apartment. It's nice to get to know the rest of the faculty at my school and they were speaking a lot of German so I hope listening to them is making me get better! All the teachers were very nice and I learned a lot more about Austrian culture by talking to them. Such as there is a constant heated debate about the spelling of many different words in Austria and it changes every year. And how half of Austrian's salary goes toward taxes!Today- Wednesday, my Austrian Art & Architecture class took a tour of the Greek and Roman sculpture section of the Kunsthistoriches Museum since that is what we are learning about right now. It's really cool to see all these famous works of art that we are talking about in person! So that is everything I have been up to lately! I am going to visit Salzburg, Austria this weekend because I wanted to see it before it got too cold. It's been very warm here actually and sunny, beautiful days. But I still miss home! I hope everyone is doing well!
