So I have been here for over a week now. A very interesting week, filled with lots of highs and a few lows. Last Saturday I decided to go on a walk through historic Annecy. Most of the old town dates back to the middle ages. I love parking my bike somewhere and then discovering random canals, alleys and churches. One of the things I like most about Annecy is that the most charming places are found in the most unexpected areas. Little parks that hide behind Cathedral, creperies tucked between 700 year old houses and canals lined with brightly colored flowers. This place looks like a Hollywood set. The town has a quiet magical charm that cannot be put into words. I feel like I should be seeing Disney princesses popping out of windows left and right.
While walking around the town, I stumbled upon a cobblestone hill. I figured it would probably lead to a nice view of the city, so I climbed it. To my surprise, there was a castle on top of the hill. Naturally, I went into the castle and wandered around corridors, eating rooms and banquet halls. Many of the rooms were turned into small museums. There was an aquarium room, a modern art room, a natural science room etc...On the way home I stopped at one of Annecy's many ice-cream parlors and discovered Nutella ice cream. That's right. NUTELLA ICE CREAM. I almost peed my pants right there in the ice cream shop.
My first week of work was okay. I'm responsible for the kids from the time they wake up to when they put their pjs on. Duties include: waking them up, geting them dressed and ready for school, preparing breakfast, taking them to school, tidying up their rooms, making lunch, taking them home for lunch, taking them back to school, preparing an after school snack, picking them up from school, doing homework with them, giving them their baths, and preparing clothes for tomorrow. All of this is fine and dandy, except that my every move was watched and scrutinized by their grandmother. Don't get me wrong, she is a sweet lady. But good gravy she can be annoying. I'm fine with taking orders and having my work evaluated, but she was a whole other level of nitpicky. Oh and learning to drive a stick shift with her was just all kinds of fun. On Tuesday night I couldn't take it anymore and talked to Jean-Marc (au pair dad). Best decision of my week. After that I took driving lessons through a French driving school and grandma finally backed off...well a little bit atleast.
Next week I start my French classes. I'm really looking forward to it because I'll finally get to meet other au pairs (its a school just for au pairs). My au pair family is great, but I need social contact with people my own age. I am also yet to discover Annecy's nightlife, which in my world is an essential part of living. Ginger needs to get his clubbin on.
Well I guess that's all for now. I miss all of you wonderful Ohioans.
A bientôt
