Howdy all,
Greeting from sunny Goa.Well it's been a few weeks since the last update, I could say sorry but I'm not - too busy doing stuff to be sitting in front of a pc (anyhow, that's what the working people of the world do, not unemployed bums like me).Speaking of work, how's the economic crisis going? Strangely its not prime time news on the beaches of Goa so I'm feeling a bit out of touch.Where's a blackberry when you want one hey?
Moving on from my last blog, we continued around Rajasthan, visiting plenty of holy temples, ruined forts and other religious stuff.Stayed in a few nice renovated forts, had xmas in Pushkar (no pressies!), camped overnight in the desert after a very uncomfortable camel ride and celebrated nye in Udaipur. Our Indian xmas lunch consisted of fried egg spring rolls, fried vegetable cutlets and french fries - not exactly a highlight!
Our tour group was an entertaining bunch so we all had fun despite the lack of family and close friends.Note that the Aussies remained undefeated on the billiard table, beating the Poms and South Africans (better than our current cricket team!)
Visited the Taj hotel and Leopold's bar in Mumbai where the recent bombings were. You wouldn't know anything had happened apart from a few holes in the wall at Leopold's and all the tourists taking pics.
When our tour finished we where going to get a train from Mumbai down to Goa but another 14 hours on a cramped Indian rust bucket didn't fill us with glee so we splashed out and flew 45mins instead.b***** the greenhouse effect, love the airplane!
Goa is India's tropical beach paradise.Plenty of holiday makers including the usual plethora of overweight drunk westerners. Some towns have a bit of "Costa del sol" feel about them but Anjuna, where we are, is smaller and a bit more relaxed. We are cruising around on a little moped, visiting the seaside towns, markets and all that stuff.Eating plenty of good seafood (well I am, not LB of course) and drinking lots of fresh fruit shakes.Temp is around low 30's in case you were wondering.
A couple of observations so far - Indian's love a good old stare at the white guy.Even the cab drivers will turn around and gawk at you while the car is sitting at traffic lights.Even though we generally visited the touristy places, we felt as much of a tourist attraction for the locals as the things we were there to see.Everyone wants to get their photo taken with you - and whilst I know I'm pretty good looking (especially with all the facial hair) why they would want a picture with a total stranger I have no idea.
Cows, cows and more cows - the holy beast certainly knows it is king in India. The bloody things are all over the place and have no problem sitting in the middle of the road for a bit of a nap safe in the knowledge no one would dare get them to move out of the way.All I can think of is that they would make a nice big steak.
Anyhow, enough from me for now.Hope all are well.Next off down south to the Kerala region to get on a houseboat.
Cheers,
MT&LB
PS: Curry bum status - this stuff is going "through me" like no tomorrow.Feeling ok but never wish to me more than a few hundred yards from a loo at any one point in time.Spending some serious quality time in the bathroom these days.Starting to think about taking a good book into the loo and staying there to save myself walking back and forth every 10 minutes.
PPS: Beard status - growing nicely, haven't had a shave for 8 weeks now. It's getting pretty bushy, LB asks me to get rid of it everyday but I am holding out.Starting to resemble Grizzly Adams.A few locals have referred to me as Ali Baba.I'm assuming this is a compliment.
