Today I went to Glacier Viedma for trekking, which is accessed by one-hour boat ride from El Chalten. It was a very pleasant ride, sunny and not too windy. As we started to approach the glacier however, the storm seemed to be forming right at the exact spot of where we were supposed to trek. We saw very impressive icebergs, some bigger than the boat. At some point, we couldn't even stand outside anymore to take pictures, because of the rain and the wind - it was a bit scary. The glacier trekking was supposed to last two and a half hours, stopping at caves, and passing gaps that were impressive. The group was very small, only 5 people, and all Argentinian except me. The boat started rocking because of the strong wind and the waves. Finally, we were informed that we would not be able to trek, because of the combination of three factors - poor visibility, rain and strong wind. The guides could deal with one or two obstacles, but not all three at the same time - its too dangerous, they said. We picked up the earlier group that managed to complete their journey right before the storm started. I had a nice chat with them about their trekking, and looked at the pictures they took. I was a bit dissappointed by their pictures, because they weren't as impressive as I had imagined them to be. The people were pretty satisfied with the trekking, and said that it is definately better than Perito Moreno mini-trekking. I couldn't decide between the two for a few days. The weather is not a big issue at Perito Moreno, it's sunny most of the time, and we learned that the glacier started breaking yesterday, which only happens every four years.
