Windy and Wet Wellington
When we arrived in the north island, we arrived in the capital of New Zealand, Wellington. Driving of the ferry we didn't have very far to go, basically 2 minutes round the corner was a waterfront motorhome park. We thought great, right next to the harbour and the city, all the other caravan parks for Wellington were well outside the city itself. Unfortunately this motorhome park wasn't the nicest looking... it was basically part of a city centre car park with power, toilets and showers! It was after 6pm when we arrived so we had to do a computerised check-in which was hard work. After some tea we thought we'd get an early night as the weather was miserable. Miserable is an understatement, we were in a storm that evening... the wind was rocking the van most of the night, thunder and lightning now and again = not much sleep.
Still raining the following day we went walking around the city. Even though it was a horrible day, we could tell that it was a nice city. The best bit was the Te Papa Museum which was pretty cool. In here they have an actual colossal squid that was caught near antartica... it was pretty big. The colossal squid has the largest eye of any animal in the world! Also in the museum was lots of information about volcano's and earthquakes which was very good and knowledgable. New Zealand has unfortunately got a high earthquake rate. We went in an earthquake simulator and would never like to be in that situation, very scary.
Later that afternoon we drove to the outskirts of the city and did a shop before finding the most random dump station we had come across on our trip... it was basically a livestoke s*** deposit with motorhome waste in the same place... lovely!!!
Unfortunately the weather was still very grim, so we didn't visit the botanical gardens and Mt Victoria lookout like planned. Instead we just went and bought some very smart canterbury tracksuit bottoms and sweater. That evening we slept alot better as there wasn't a storm.
Wellington would have been better if the weather hadn't ruined it... oohh well can't complain, we can't get it perfect everywhere.
