Fort Negley History Hike
I went on a hike today with Tennessee Trails to Fort Negley in Nashville. Our hike was led by Civil War Historian & author, Mark Zimmerman. Our scheduling worked out great as they were have a living history event complete with Civil War re-enactors.
Fort Negley was one of several forts that surrounded Nashville during the Civil War era. Nashville sits in a bowl so there were fortifications on the surrounding hillsides. It looked much different in those days (besides the wear on the buildings) because the hilltop was completely bald so they could see in every direction. There's a debate now on whether they should clear the trees to make it more historically accurate. The environmentalists say "no."
It was a beautiful day, and it was nice to be able to explore around more. The only other time I have been to Fort Negley was when we did the Oyster Race a few years ago. I have more pictures to upload once I pull them off my camera. Most of them were taken by Karen Caldwell - she forgot her camera, so she used mine for a lot of the day.
