For Day two here in Charleston I'm doing the real tourist thing and taking a horse carriage ride. The guide Steve and our beautiful horse was much better than yesterday's mini-bus that I'd opted for. We toured at a leisurely pace around the residential streets. You can tell from my photos that I love buildings! Nearly every building here in the centre is beautiful. Some are manicured, others are crooked... a hangover from the last earthquake in 1886.
After being dropped back at the Red Barn I was back on foot. I stopped for a glass of Sonoma Valley Chardonnay, Brie, Tupelo honey, walnuts, apple slices all bejewelled with pomegranate seeds at Flynn and O'Hara before heading for the supermarket at the end of Hassel Street (pronounced Hazel). Harris and Teeter was fun to explore. Still no small salad portions, but I did pick up some cheese, tomatoes and hazelnut biscuits for my train journey tomorrow. As I left the supermarket there was an almighty downpour. When I say it rained, I mean it really rained big! Sheltering under a tree (which I know you shouldn't really do in a storm) was no protection, and, neither was my woollen scarf. I ran for it and made it to Sticky Fingers on Meeting Street, soaking wet with rain running down my face and soggy clothes. I wanted to try some Southern Fried food while here, so I had sweet potato casserole, coleslaw and fried corn on the cob. (I reckon if I ate meat it would have been wonderful, but I don't and it was tasty anyway). I drizzled the sweet potato casserole with Carolina Sweet barbecue sauce. It was lipsmakingly good! So good, I've bought a bottle!
An early start tomorrow. I catch the train to Miami at 5.05am, so will need to leave my hotel at around 4.15am. I hope the sun does its thing in the sunshine state, as I'm hoping for a tan!
