Day one Charleston started with breakfast on the fourth floor roof terrace of the Andrew Pinckney Inn and a Skype call to the UK. I think I made a new flavour combination. By mistake I put cream cheese on my biscuit (scone) instead of butter, followed by fruit jelly on top. It reminded me of a cream tea, just less rich. So, I ate the whole thing as it was actually pretty good!
I did the 'tourist thing' in the morning taking a tour mini-bus ride to get a flavour of Charleston. The driver, Ken was not what I'd call a smooth driver. There are many street intersections and we lurched from one stop to the next as he accelerated and then applied the breaks. My photos are all over the shop as a result (and so was my breakfast... almost). Charleston is beautiful and everything I hoped for. The architecture, mainly Victorian era is stunning and very well maintained. The BAR (not of the law variety, but the Architectural kind) are doing a good job in ensuring the history, charm and style are retained.
I was on foot for the rest of the day taking in the atmosphere along with locals and others tourists. Apparently, tourism is the number one trade here in Charleston, and I can well believe it. I walked through the market, a series of brick structures that used to house food produce for sale. Today it's occupied by crafts people selling their wares. Kind of like the Covent Garden of Downtown Charleston. A tradition here is the basket weaving, heralding originally from Africa. Very intricate work, and very pricey. A small basket costs around $100!
I ate at Bubba Gump, selecting a mushroom burger with the local palmetto brew to wash it down. Then more walking, wandering down King Street, a smart shopping street with boutiques and antique stores. All very charming.
I'd planned to venture out for dinner, but fell asleep and woke up at 10pm. My shoulder is still sore from helping an elderly lady with her bags at Dallas Union Station a few days ago. I guess carrying my 2 heavy bags and her very heavy bag was a little too much for my right arm and shoulder. I'm hoping the rest today and tomorrow will help heal the muscle.
