I'm on board the Coast Starlight from Portland Oregon to Emeryville California. The views of Oregon are stunning! Lush green agricultural land with mountains in the background. I was able to sit in the first class lounge at Portland Union Station and help myself to a peppermint tea. The attendant even passed on some tips for San Francisco. The train arrived early and once I found my cabin I took in lunch in the dining car. I sat opposite a delightful couple on their way back to California after a break in Portland. It was great to compare notes. I selected the spicey black bean burger, followed by orange sorbet for my late lunch. All surprisingly tasty once again.
We've all been invited into the lounge car for a cheese and wine tasting. It's informal today - help your self. All the wines are from Oregon and Washington State (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Syrah, Pinot Noir). The cheeses are really tasty especially the smoked mozzarella and the lavender infused cheese. All a great way to pass the time. Apparently, there should be a Parlour car, but it was taken out of service, but fortunately they've put a wifi connection in the lounge, hence why I'm able to post.
Last night was fun. I did in the end go down to the bar around 10pm. The bartender Jonas was an expert at making the art of mixing cocktails look easy. He was serving Spanish Coffees to some people at the bar. Apparently not many places serve this and it was quite a spectacle, almost like fireworks. I tried the violette femme. It's not my favourite but my curiosity was appeased. I got talking to Don, an aluminium salesman on business in the area. He's been to Europe many times, so our conversation evolved around the different cultures and reception received in various countries.
This morning I found the post office and managed to mail some long over due thank-you notes. I revisited Public Domain coffee for another gorgeous cup of latte and at noon nipped into Oregon Wines on Broadway for a small taster glass of Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet) which was recommended by the bartender. A nice way to complete my Portland leg.
