Managed to get a lift around the painted monasteries with the couple we met from sheffield. The monasteries are really quite spectacular and the detail the painters have put into their work is very impressive, every bit of wall in the churches was originally covered.
There were some common pictures we saw in each church such as the last judgement, the Jesse tree and the martyrdom of the saints.
Also saw some beautiful gold and silver icons of Jesus, the virgin and infant as well as Saint George and Saint Nicolas.
We were lucky in Putna as we got to see the monks in church during a service and watched them recount prayers and reading from scripture. We also discovered a strange tradition where the nuns walk around the church building hammering a plank of wood and crossing themselves. Definitely need to google it and discover why they do this.
After five monasteries we got very hungry and stopped in a restaurant for a traditional Romanian meal.
