Hey!
So I decided to get my blog up and running...better than writing out an email 10 times! So so far my journey has been great.
First stop was Dubai and that was so worth it! I got a bit of a shock with the cultural differences at first but it was actually really interesting to just watch ppl and how they did things. The first thing I remember seeing was a man I thought was sniffing a carpet by an elevator in the airport and I was thinking...what the heck is he doing?! Turns out it was the 5.30am prayer call...you could hear it every morning clearly anywhere, and they were 5 times a day.
It was really hot which was nice...and I thought I could walk to the beach...huh! it was actually about 5km away and I walked about 200 metres and then decided I would attempt public transport. Kinda scary at first being in arabic but luckily most things were repeated in English.
I went on a city tour with a bunch of ppl the first day and went on these water boat things and to a gold market...unbelievable! and to a spice market and to see landmarks like that flash hotel...Burj al Arab, the flashest in the world. I couldnt see the manmade islands from down low and it took me a while to figure out how i was gonna get to see them but i managed to convince a security person in a fancy hotel to let me go to the top floor...it was crazy man.
Then my desert safari thing was sweet as. We went on a jeep riding through the sand dunes...at least 3 times i thought we were gonna die lol! We got to go on the camels too and had a middle eastern dinner in the desert at this camp thing, and a belly dancing show and i got to get a pretty henna tattoo on my leg, dress up like the women there do (stuff that!), and there was sheesha too but i didnt have that. The other jeep that was with our group got stuck in the sand too on the way back to Dubai so we were in the middle of the desert at like 10pm stranded till the guys could get it out...was quite funny though.
And I went to ski dubai too...i walked in and nearly walked out again...i freaked out as ive only ever skiied once before and the slopes looked way to dangerous for me!! Luckily though i managed to get this (hot!) turkish guy to refresh my memory so that i could stop at the bottom..and it was good as. I even went on the expert run and only fell at stupid times like when i was watching someone else come down the slope and tripped over myself...dumb! It was really cold after a while though and i didnt bring gloves, man my fingers burned the first time i raked them through the ice!!!
I got lost in 2 shopping malls too...I just couldnt get out!!! and it was killing me too coz there was so much cool stuff i wanted to buy and it wasnt too badly priced but my luggage was already overweight so i was trying to leave as fast as i could without convincing myself i needed the extra scarf etc.
One thing that was interesting in dubai tho was that all the bus stops are air conditioned! and nearly all the palm trees are dead, supposedly dubai has nearly the highest usage of water in the world too to keep some places green etc.
The day i looked like the biggest idiot tho, well 2 days, was going to the ski dubai place wearing thermals and big woolly socks and a scarf...and it was like 30 degrees outside! and then carrying all my luggage, 3 suitcases down the street in pure hot sun towards the metro...noone there would do that coz theyre mostly rich as ppl so everyone stared at me, but it was rather amusing.
And then I arrived in France on Monday night....
