My mom and I took a quick lunch in some area of San Juan. It's the other side of what tourists are used to. You can see the poor neighborhoods and the fruit and vegetable stands in the streets. It's one of those "not safe" areas but at least during the day it was pretty ok. We went to eat to Fuentes BBQ, by the name and so many other things it is very easy to see the influence of the United States in the island. I ate roasted chicken with rice and beans, which is like the typical diet in the island and my mom had roasted chicken with mofongo, which is a puerto rican dish typically made with fried green plantains mashed together in a "pilón". A pilón is a wooden mortar and pestle. Mom had a diet coke and I had a malta india. For dessert I had "tierrita" which is kind of a mix of cream cheese, butter, sugar, chocolate or vanilla pudding with a top layer of crushed oreo cookies that look like soil. This is usually served in a small pot for plants and on top it's usually adorned with sugar flowers. Tierrita is made in many restaurants and food places throughout the island and it's one of my favorite desserts since I was a child.
