Day 5 Wednesday 2nd June 2010, Wadi Musa-Wadi Rum.
'Hotel Bedouino; Mil Estrellas'
We finally said goodbye to the Cleopetra Hotel but not before the guy's dad asked us yet again if we wanted to have dinner with them and if we had a car. The usual questions he asks every day!
We needed petrol before heading on our way to Wadi Rum, which meant heading off in the opposite direction. After 5 minutes we stopped to ask a policeman where the petrol station was, only to have him point at it from where he was standing! After a bit of slightly psychotic driving, to make up time, we arrived at Wadi Rum a few minutes late and met our guide, Obeid, a very nice man!
His son drove us to their Bedouin camp site in the middle of the desert. Wow the scenery was out of this world. A desert landscape with huge Ayers rock type outcrops of stone all over the place, absolutely stunning. Once we dropped off our bags and had as much tea as we could possibly drink we headed off for the first of two off-road jeep cruises.
This first one had a big Lawrence of Arabia theme. They showed us where the film was made and the now derelict house which was made for Lawrence in the film. We also visited a natural stone bridge where the rock has been eroded to leave just a thin sliver in the form of a bridge. When we arrived here there was a group of French people attempting to climb up and making a real meal of it. Turned out it was easy, I almost walked up!
After this we headed back to camp and met up with an English/Welsh couple and their daughter, whom we went off with for our second Jeep safari. This time we went to see where the Bedouins get their water from, now a dry spring. After this we climbed a big sand dune and then had fun jumping off the top. Of course, I had to roll down, as did Cris, oh my God so much sand got everywhere, in every nook and cranny!
Next up was the camel ride which was as cool as ever, Margot really enjoyed herself. They took us out from the camp to a random set of rocks to watch the sunset and then back to camp for showers and dinner. The way they made dinner was so cool, in a hole in the ground, buried in the sand and it was really tasty! After dinner we sat around the fire watching the stars. We saw a couple of shooting stars and listened to the Bedouins playing a drum and singing funny songs. It was really cool, then the sleep in the desert, how cool is that!
