After a turbulent 2 hour flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket it was nice to step off the plane into blazing sunshine, which we hadn't really seen since Dubai. Phuket airport was right by the sea, which was unnerving as we felt we were going to land in the water!
We had absolutely no idea where we were going to go in Phuket, so as soon as we heard some one mention Patong Beach, we decided to go there. A short(ish) taxi ride later, we asked the driver to take us to a cheap hotel as close to the beach as possible. The hotel wasn't great, but better than anywhere we'd stayed in Thailand yet, so we duly threw our bags into the room and raced down to the beach. And what a welcome sight! the beach was lovely, perfect white sand, a warm sea and plenty of sunbeds and drinks stalls. We lay on the beach for the remainder of the day, watched the sun go down, burnt ourselves silly (I had some special sunglasses marks) and dragged ourselves back to the room, where we changed and popped out for dinner in Patong. What we didn't realise is that Patong is a rather seedy part of Phuket island. There were lots of men with young looking Thai girls on their arms. Although the beach was lovely in the daytimes, we were nearly kept awake by the sounds of men returning to the hotel room, absolutely steaming drunk, with Thai girls hanging onto them. We also had the pleasure of listening to them 'doing the deed' after that, which was really lovely!
I wasn't a big fan of Patong, but we certainly relaxed and pampered ourselves, and having a decent hotel room was definitely worth it! We were also paparazzied by asian tourists, who seemed like they'd never seen a white person before. It began with them taking sneaky photos of us when we weren't looking, and eventually they plucked up the courage to ask to have some photos taken with us. I almost felt like a celebrity, until Clout pointed out that my face was like a lobster from sunburn and maybe they'd never seen such a thing.....
