After Jess wrote last night we all went for a cool off shower and ended up having a nap. We had met some british girls just before who asked if we wanted to go for dinner with them. We brought them to the riverside where we had gone before and already decided where we would eat. We ate at "on the corner" or "a la coin". Most places here have french and english names and menus are translate in English, French and Khmer. While this place did offer some french delicacies like steak tartar and cheese fondue, we all opted for an Khmer/some sort of asian dish - very delicious food as normal. We went for a few cocktails after dinner before rolling into the hostel at almost midnight - not the best idea when we had to be awake by 5:30.
We learned a few things this morning in cambodia. "Be downstairs before 6am so that we can take you to the bus." means "I'm going to waltz into reception at 6.10am still in my towel...." We also preordered breakfast which was bought with the money we paid for our room with...at 6.15 the baguettes were being prepared and I got up at about 6.23 to askthe guy if we should head for the bus...bare in mind our bus left at 6.30.
Our little friend took us in his tuk tuk (still obviously hungover as when we climbed in countless empty cans of angkor beer were lying there). We were told this was a quality bus with AC, a toilet and insurance. It did have AC which did smell a little gassy.....there was however no toilet. The guy handed out little black bags an hour into the journey...we were scepticle as to what these were for but later discovered they were just bin bags! (not poo bags.)
We made a few stops along the way which demanded that we have our first experiences with local toilets. Thats right, a drop hole toilet that was flushed with a bit of water in a bucket - yum. This old little cambodian lady walked out of one and mumbled something to me in Khmer but of course I had no clue what she was saying....I can only assume it was something like "sorry i managed to throw water all over the bathroom" or something of the sort.
The 6ish hour bus ride actually passed rather painlessly. We all managed to get some sleep. We had already booked in at the sister hostel to our one from Phnom Penh so we had a little man waiting for us with a "Welcome Jessica Hofmans" sign...so cute! We got in his tuk tuk and were brought to the hostel - very nice and clean. We opted for a fan room this time to save us a couple dollars.
We got changed out of our nice sweaty bus clothes and hit the town. Walked around a bit before we found a cute little cafe for lunch and then went to the markets. I think its safe to say our haggling skills are getting pretty good as we all managed to bring down the original prices. eg. the guy asked for 5 dollars for one top and we ended up getting two for 4 dollars - pretty pleased with that!
Now back at the hostel for some cooling down as we are all on the verge of melting. Then we'll go to the night market (and try not to spend more money...but you never know in this country as everything is so pretty! including the little kids! (no we wont buy one of those...)) We already found a place to go for dinner one "Pub Street" (clearly a really local area....not.) so will go there before an early night! Have to be up before 4.30am tomorrow as we are going to watch the sunrise by Angkor Wat!
Hopefully some photos will get uploaded when we reach Singapore so stay tuned!
