Marty's Adventures
Up at 630 for breakfast then back out on the boat with Luis to bring in his nets. Luis is learning English so most of our explanations are broken but we eventually understand. We are learning from each other. The fish in the nets were very small but apparently very delicious. A great way to start the day. It has been kind of like camping, there is a toilet though that flushes and some very cold running water to wash your hands. All water caught in rain barrels. It is not the most appealing to the eye place but it has been an amazing experience so far.
Luis had arranged for a tour boat to pick us up at his island and take us to an island called Taquile. About an hour and a half by boat, it is an island that is about 1km wide and 5km long. The houses and little farms are built on the hills. They grow beans and lots of quinoa amongst other things. About 2000 people live on this island and there are no cars or motorcycles etc, just paths of dirt or stone and lots of stairs!
We had a yummy trout lunch and amazing quinoa soup! They showed us a few traditional things like weaving belts and we learned all about the traditional dress. Single ladies wear bright colors, bright yellow or pink skirts and the married ladies wear dark blue skirts and a red top. Married men wear red hats and single men wear white. Men also knit, there men knitting as they walked or just sat and knit. We had the most beautiful view looking across Lake Titicacca at the mountains of Bolivia.
After lunch we headed up up up to the main square. It is pretty quiet on the island so was nice to roam around. We made our way up and over the top of the island and then down 500 stairs....or rocks as I wouldn't call them stairs per say! On the way down there people selling crafts and treats. I decided to buy they children lollipops to make up for the polar ice gum incident! We boarded the boat and headed back.
When we returned Luis took us in his little boat over to another island to visit another family where they had a museum. In this museum, everything was made of reeds. The birds, the fish, the people...everything! It was so cool! Luis then took us for a ride in his boat around to see the other islands. A beautiful evening. We are both very wiped from all the fresh air and sun out on the water we had today.
Our little friends must of forgiven us for the gum incident as now they want to play and teach us how to count. We would count together and each time we would lift them or flip them. They are giggling, it is all so cute. Then they showed us a game they play with the reeds. You pick a reed and wrapped yours around theirs and pull. If your reed breaks you lose. More giggles as they seemed to have this game down pat and we lost mostly!
Finally we were able to get in our room for a few minutes of down time before dinner. It is very chilly and I understand why they wear layers and layers of wool clothing. Lake Titicacca is an extremely large lake and is the highest navigable lake in the world. The clouds look so low, but we are just very close to the clouds! I wish I had a few more warmer pieces of clothing but for now the 5 thick blankets on the bed will do!
Another great dinner of trout, same as last night but I am not complaining because it was so good! Early to bed as we have a 5am boat ride to the mainland then a bus to catch to our next destination. Another quiet night, except for the birds....lots of different birds out there!
