Marty's Adventures
Up bright and early and had breakfast at the hotel. The coffee and milk come in these little jugs, you pour the coffee in to your own cup depending on how strong you like it then there is hot water in a thermos. Guess it is a good way to please everyone! We headed to the bus station, Terminal Touristic, where we boarded our bus to Puno. I may of held my breath in between gasps as our taxi driver maneuvered his was through traffic to get to the bus station. The bus ride was very comfy. Seats that reclined and had leg rests, I may of had a nap! The scenery was amazing. Mountains and farms, random groups of llamas, sheep and alpacas. It seemed each random herd had an old lady sitting in the field next to them. Our host at the floating Island Luis, met us at the bus station in Puno. We wanted to get our bus tickets for the next part of our trip before leaving the bus station. That turned into a stressful episode when we could not find the kiosk for the bus line we wanted and people were trying to sell us stuff and bus tickets to who knows where. Hopefully we have tickets, we have something that looks like a ticket so will just have faith! Luis brought us to his wee little boat where his wife Sylvia was waiting. This area is the principal main port for the residents of the Uros islands. There are 87 floating islands. There were boats lined up, some unloading their fish to be sold. We hopped in the little boat with him and his wife and off we went into the reeds. There seemed to be a main pathway through the reeds. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was surprised when it opened up an we were surrounded by islands of reeds with houses of reeds. Each island has a look out tower. We arrived at the island we were staying. It was squishy to walk on, very odd feeling. The place did not look quite like the pictures on the website so our first impression was a bit iffy. We got settled in and walked around the island. We took pictures with skirts and traditional hats. There was a little girl who attached herself to us and came to show us our room. She saw I had gum and she wanted some. I asked her mother first then gave her one. I think she thought it was chiclets or fruity gum because the look on her face when she bit into the polar ice gum was priceless. She did her best to keep a smile then as soon as we walked away she took it out of her mouth. I don't think she likes me anymore. Luis asked if we would like to go out with him to put his fishing nets in. We headed out on the boat with him. It was so peaceful as the sun went down he rowed slowly up the river of reeds letting his net out. We had a lovely trout dinner with rice and fries made by Luis sister. We are in our room very early. Once the sun went down everyone kind of disappeared so we went to our room as it is chilly out. It is so quiet and dark. There are spiders coming down from the ceiling, I suppose it is to be expected as we are in a hut on an island made of reeds! Off to sleep early.
