Marty's Adventures
Milford Sound Boat tour is rated the #1 must do in New Zealand. So I figured I best do it! It was a very long drive out....4.5hrs.....I do not get car sick....however.....the winding mountain roads definitely affected me more than I am used to. We drove out of Queenstown along between a mountain range called The Remarkables( will get pictures not in a bus on Tuesday) and Lake Wakipitu......the day started off with a mix of sun and clouds so their was amazing views of the mountains. We stopped in a place called Lake Te Anua which was about halfway for a break from the bus and a stretch.....I was in need of a tummy settling and had not even entered into the mountains! Coming out of Lake Te Anua there were green fields filled with sheep.....thousands of sheep and cattle. It is spring here so there are babies everywhere....so cute! The drive in through the mountains was spectacular even with the clouds. We went for a small hike at a place called The Charms, amazing waterfalls at the top and trees that are covered in moss you cannot see any bark.....imagine how green!! We drove through a tunnel, 1.2kms long through a mountain! When we came out the other side there was switchbacks all the way down to Milford Sound. Milford Sound is in Fiordland National Park. It is a fiord that comes in 15 km from the Tasman Sea. It reminded me a lot of Western Brook Pond in Newfoundland, but the mountains were more spectacular and higher.....as well the waterfalls were amazing!! We saw a bit of wildlife....we had a rare sighting of a wandering albatross, a white bird with a wing span of about 2 meters! We also saw seals, and some rock lobster that the fisherman were showing off!! It was an amazing boat ride. The drive home went quick....I slept for half of it ( only ad 3 hours sleep last night) and then we watched a movie. I got off the bus in town and walked back to the hostel to get some exercise after a long day in the bus! No plans yet for tomorrow....will see what the day brings!
