It's been an action packed few days in Barcelona. Rachel and I arrived on Monday night and have been staying at Mikaela's apartment as she finishes up her last bit of uni here. We are staying in the Gracia area which has many food shops and cafes.
On Tuesday we did a heap of walking around the city, taking in a lot of shops and sites. We visited an exhibition of cartoonist, Mariscat, that was taking place in Gaudi's La Pedrara, it was a really fun exhibition and the building was amazing! Otherwise we walked all over. La Rambla was very busy due to the holiday as well as the Gothic district. We met up with some of Miki's Catalan friends who showed us the Christmas market and took us through the El Raval and Port Vell areas before having some drinks and tapas, a great day!
We were up early the next day to catch the sunrise from Parc Guell, one of Gaudi's masterpieces. It was great to have the whole place pretty much to ourselves! Later that day after more exploring and shopping we headed to the MACBA to see the world press photography exhibit, which had some haunting and amazing photos. We then met up with Miki's flatmates for a tasty dinner in Gracia.
Yesterday we explored a lot of the Modernism buildings. We started at Gaudi's Casa Batllo, a house showing his ingenious originality and functionality. Then we checked out the Palau de la Musica Catalana and Hospital de Sant Pau from the outsides before finishing off at the Sagrada Familia, which we will return to see inside. We then headed to see the latest Harry Potter installment, well worth it, before having a fun shared dinner at the flat.
Today Rach and I left Miki to do some work and headed off for a day trip to Montsarat, a mountain of amazing stone shapes, which is considered very holy with a monastery, basilica and many hermitages to explore on it. It was a very beautiful site and made for a great day!
