It's now my last day in London and I'm doing my final preparations to go home (I'm going home! Yay!).
I've now finished my Applied Puppetry module (as a probational student), and was overjoyed to be offered a place to complete the Professional Puppeteer's Diploma! That means that I will be coming back to the UK (probably in June) to continue my studies. I'll be preparing a glove puppetry piece (based on 'Shakespeare as Caberet') to perform at a few festivals/shows in July-October. I'll also hopefully be doing a marionette carving course in June, which I'm really looking forward to!
Studies aside, I've been spending the last few days in London staying with some lovely family friends, including Aunty Veronica (who practically fed me kimchi on arrival! Oh, how I had missed Korean food!) I've trekked into the city of London a couple of times to do some sightseeing, and my are there some sights to see in this city:
- The Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament (which I sketched until it started to hail)
- Westminster Abbey (had a fantastic guided tour, led by one of the vergers who happened to be just like Rowan Atkinson. Cheerful and very funny)
- Covent Garden (I think this place was one of my favourites - it has lots of arty markets, funky shops and street performers. Also very tasty cornish pasties)
- Shakespeare's Globe Theare (also went on a tour for this one - very interesting, especially when learning about how they did special effects in the olden days - turns out they used real props for quite some time, including an actual cannon!)
- St Paul's Cathedral (one of London's major skyline icons. It looks even more stunning up close)
- The British Museum (my 3 hour visit did not do this place justice at all - I think a person would need almost a week to go through it all. So much history in there!)
I also went to see the puppet musical "Avenue Q" at the Noel Coward Theatre in Leicester Square. On the great advice of another family friend, Aunty Pearl, I bought my ticket for half price at 'tkts' (a booth in the middle of Leicester Square). The show was very funny (though definitely not for kids!) and the set was amazingly clever.
I've definitely had an amazing time in the UK so far - I look forward to going back to see more of London, and I can't wait to see Yorkshire again (I miss it already). But for now, I am homeward bound (23 hours of travel, here I come!)
