Cefalu was supposed to be this little tourist town an hour away from Palermo. It is small, but after four days there are still more things that I wanted to see there. We made quick friends with some locals and spent relaxing days lounging on the beach and walking around the town.
Last night was our last night here, we had a nice meal out and then headed to maljk (spelling???). Maljk is a crazy outdoor beachy nightclub with posh seating, a pool and gardens. We went to meet up with some friends we'd met but only ended up running into two groups of overly pushy guys that we had met at the restaurant earlier. It seems it's very easy to meet people in sicilia. After a short time even the scenery could not make it worthwhile for us to stay. With our quotient of face touching and random grabby guys way past met we headed home.
Yesterday, before all that, we met Marco, a lifeguard at one of the beach stands. I had seen them out surfing before and inquired about renting a board. He said that there are no rentals in cefalu but that he'd take me out later. So at seven we went out into the bathwater warm sea and surfed for about an hour and a half. It's been a while for me and I have many bruises and sore muscles today. But I don't think I've ever been in a more beautiful surf spot. Sunset, still water, clean waves, and the city of cefalu and cliffs behind me. I didn't know there was surf here, but now that I do I think i will have to come back.
Marco was telling me about his next big trip, three months of chasing surf and summer. He had a drawing on the back of his work clipboard that described his perfect home...surf, sun, beach, a few storms to kick up the water and friends. Simple.
