Milla and Jonny's Travels
We arrived in Singapore this afternoon after a 26 hour train journey. Luckily the trains have beds and a restaurant so it was actually more comfortable than a plane or bus.
Our last night in Thailand felt very strange. Although we were pleased to be moving on, there was something quite sad about leaving this crazy country that we had come to call home for the past month. Thailand is full of surprises, a fact that we were reminded of as we walked down a quiet road in Hat Yai, looking for our last Thai meal, and suddenly found a huge elephant trudging down it.
Singapore is, in a way, quite a culture shock coming straight from Thailand. Everything is clean, everyone speaks English and most things are illegal (such as dropping litter, chewing gum, smoking and jay-walking). It is a very exciting place though, with tonnes of shopping to be had. The best thing about it is that there are so many different nationalities here, so you can experience Chinese, Malaysian, Indian, Japanese, Arabic and Indonesian culture all in the space of a few hours. Tonight, we found a very chilled Arabic cafe where we sat and drank Egyptian teas, ate flatbread and babaganoush and smoked a caramel shisha. It felt extremely decadent but was very cheap. Tomorrow we hope to experience Singapore zoo and sample some award-winning toilets.
