Milla and Jonny's Travels
Despite our unlimited free internet at our Singapore hostel, we have been very lazy about updating the journal so there is a lot to catch up on.
A huge highlight of our Singapore experience was visiting the Zoo. There are no real enclosures so many of the animals, such as the monkeys, are roaming around free. In the evening, we went on the Night Safari where we could wander around in the dark and have close encounters with more nocturnal animals (like the enormous fruit bats, flying squirrels and hyenas). Jonny even got onstage at a show to hold a ten foot python called Maggie.
The next day we partook in what appears to be singapore's favourite pastime, shopping. Wherever you go accross the city of singapore it is absolutely impossible to escape the shops. In any one street there can be up to twenty different shopping centres. A lot of the subway stations have shopping complexes attached to them. We chose to go to orchrd road, the corporate hub of singapore, described as one of the most dense shopping experiences on earth. It's a lot to take in for two people on a tight budget. Needless to say, jonny had to hold camilla back when we passed not one, but two chanel shops on the one street.
If you know where to look, however, it is possible to escape the hectic city life by heading to one of the few places where singaporean culture is still evident. Our favourties were Chinatown and Little India where locals gathered to eat cheap, ethnic food and barter in the more low key markets.
We also took a cable car up to the top of mount faber (more a large hill, but we weren't complaining). The cable ride, despite freaking milla out (see photos), afforded us great, scenic views of singapore. Once we were upon the mountain we kicked back with a few singapore slings, a game of backgammon and took in the amazing views as the sun was setting.
We arrived in Sydney this morning feeling rough after a sleepless flight from Singapore. We groggily got on the train towards Manly where we are staying. It was impossible to stay feeling this low when we boarded the ferry at Sydney Harbour as the sun was rising behind the iconic Opera House.
