Well our escape from the earthquake was remarkable as we had only passed through the epicentre hours before. Some french tourists, whom we had met at a coffee plantation enroute, were not so lucky and had to be airlifted out.
After a couple of days at Arenal volcano, near La Fortuna, and not having seen the top because of cloud, we moved on to the cloud forest at Monte Verde. This involved a half hour minibus drive, a half hour boat ride and finally a one and a half hour Costa Rican massage ie. 4x4 ride on rough roads. The scenery was stunning. We duly arrived at a sunny cloudless Monte Verde. Our hotel the Heliconia was set on a mountainside in a series of chalets. needless to say ours was the one "up there" fortunately they supplied transport for the luggage.
Here we enjoyed a canopy tour, the home of the very first canopy tour. We saw various birds and plants. We also had a look at some reptiles, mostly snakes. Then we went on a night tour, which had an exciting start when a giant, 22lbs + of rodent shot across the path in front of us nearly tripping us up. (I think it was an aguti) It looked like an enormous rat. We saw many other interesting animals including a tarantula, it was impressive. Just as the cloudless cloud forest's weather started to change we were on the move again to Manuel Antonio for bit of r & r ,it is hard work touring with all the early starts.
We are now busy catching up on boring chores such as laundry. We are also enjoying the wildlife that comes to visit here, all sorts of birds, iguanas and white faced monkeys. We have also seen some squirrel monkeys and an active sloth!
