Annie drove me with Alex, to Horton in Ribbonsdale, wherer I started my walk today..sun just about still shining so making the most of not wearing my waterproofs and over trousers! Certainly the weather looks better than yesterday..start the walk at 10.20am. Horton is full of weekend walkers, all intending to climb Pen-y ghent. It looks like hundreds of them gathering at the side of the road..how many are going on the Pennine Way....only me!!
A short walk through the village to get to the start and then off on the steady climb out of the village to get today underway.
The weather reamins Ok and by 11.20am I have climbed 560 ft and gone 2.5 miles. As I climb near Carn Fell, a head appears out of the ground, then a second, and a third and ...a fourth. Potholers!
As I pass a sign that says " no cyclists", I hear a roar behind me and lads on Samble motor cyclists roar past..and again! I push and noticing the weather suddenly deteriorating I rush to put my waterproofs on,get a terrible drenching for 15 mins and then thankfully the sun comes out again.
The long descent to Hawes is interrupted further by 12 scrambling motor cycles, maddening that in those few minutes they can do as more damage to the ground, than 12.000walkers!
Thankfully the weather is now improving , and as I continue in to Hawes, I am met By Annie and Alex. My personal trainer has a last task before we head back to Kidderminster later....helping me take my soggy waterproofs off!! A few photogrpahs en route in Hawes, the photograph on the front of the Pennine Walking Book for the south part of The PW, is now replicated in my photo album for the blog. It is a pretty town. Alex informed that he had the best hot chocolate earlier, with marshmallows, cream and flake..so I suggest that we have another..accompanied by the best and biggest slice of chocolate cake ever. Alex and I are in heaven! Annie made do with a coffee, followed by a white wine!
Today I managed another 14 miles and 1760 ft. Total now stands at 107 miles at 15,228ft. Can't wait for Wednesday when I leave Hawes, for the next stage of this marvellous trek.
