We arrived in Caye Caulker (an island off the coast of Belize City, great for diving!!) hoping for some amazing beaches and some brilliant diving, but unfortunately we found neither!
We managed to find a cheap backpackers with amazing showers called Daisy's and we booked a snorkelling trip for the following day. The day after, we planned to do the famous dive site called 'the blue hole'!!
The following day was not looking good. The sky was grey and it was pouring with rain, and we mean pouring!! But luckily when we got out to sea, the sunshine appeared. The snorkelling trip took us to 3 different sites, along the second largest Barrier Reef in the world. The first site was Hol Chan Marine Reserve. We got to this site and we were all ready to jump in. I (Becky) was one of the last to jump in; I wanted to hurry as 3 turtles had just been spotted. I sat on the edge of the boat and lowered myself into the water, and realised my bikini bottoms were caught on a hook. I grabbed the top of the boat in the hope of pulling myself up in time.....and that is when I heard a big rip...and felt the tear in my bikini flapping about in the water!!! oh dear!! lol.
After that little episode, Mike and I were back in the water and we saw 2 turtles within the first few seconds, grazing on the sea bed. We saw our first ever eagle ray, a nurse shark and a big morray eel that was swimming about beneath us. This was our favourite site's.
The second site was called Shark Ray alley which lived up to its name, as we saw a number of rays and nurse sharks. There were also some massive jacks lurking nearby. We finished the tour at Coral Gardens, but this was somewhat disappointing; not much to see!
Mikes birthday...and guess what ....NO DIVING!!!
We did plan to do diving today, but we got hit by the dreaded diving curse - a cold!!! Slightly disappointing seeing as the main reason we came here was to dive! But oh well!
So we decided to get off Caye Caulker and head over to a sleepy fishing town called Hopkins.
