We arrived at the Colombian border about 4pm, not a great time but better than in the dark. The taxi there was a silent one and you could feel the nerves in the air..?! There where signs everywhere saying "no guns" & "no drugs" so I ditched my drugs, swallowed all my guns and checked out of Ecuador. It was a 200metre walk over a bridge to the Colombian border crossing, and it felt like we was marching to our deaths.
To be honest, I really don't see what all the fuss is about.? I mean apart from people wanting to exchange money and offer a taxi, it was one the simple border crossings on this journey.? The hardest one being the Argentina to Chile one I think. If we wanted we could have just walked past immigration and not bothered checking in. So after sighs all round we decided on our destinations. I had, had enough of cities so decided to go straight to strangely the capital bogota which was about 20hours away but turned out to be 25.! Rupert decided to come with me and Kevin decided to go Cali as he could use a couch there. Are bus was leaving in 15mins so we had to get a taxi who decided to up the price when he knew how quickly we had to get there. It was a race against time, one that in Hindsight We would always win with the relaxed attitude of South American time keeping. We made sure we had a good bus after the Ecuador fiasco and said our goodbyes to Kevin.
We arrived in bogota at 6pm and found an Internet cafe to get a hostel as we hadn't booked one or checked thinking we would go Cali. For anyone that is wondering, Cali is the salsa capital of South America and apparently just like every other South America city, plazas, museums, over friendly touts (pick pockets really) and of course I imagine a McDonalds. I decided not to go for couple reasons, one I'd done all this and wanted to get to the Caribbean coast and two Daz and Jemma where on the coast in place called Santa Marta and I was eager for English charm and banter.
I spent three days in bogota visiting cathedrals, gold museums, police museums and other great places but to be fair i had, had enough of cities and wanted to see the beaches of the Caribbean coast, but that can wait for next time:
Caribbean adventures into fruit, lazy pool days, rum and the last South American bus journey.
Peace out much love Micky xxx
