We arrived late by about 90 minutes. I'd booked a snorkelling excursion to the Great Barrier Reef. We were supposed to check in at the Curzon Theatre at 9.40 for a 10.00 departure. We were all sat in the theatre for over an hour. Eventually we were able to depart. We went straight from the ship on to a catamaran and after about 75 minutes of high speed sailing, we reached a pontoon moored by the Great Barrier Reef. On the journey we saw a lot of jellyfish and a tiger shark.
Once at the pontoon, we ate lunch on board the catamaran and then went on to the pontoon to snorkel. There are a lot of very small jellyfish in the seas at this time of the year. They are about the size of a little fingernail and sting. Because of this we were given stinger suits. These are tight Lycra type body coverings. When they are on, only the face is exposed and of course, a lot of that will be covered by the mask.
I snorkelled for a while and the fish were stunning, so many beautiful colours, very small to huge fish. There was a photographer under the sea and he took photos of a grouper with various snorkellers. I actually held her. I also went on a glass bottom boat, to the underwater viewing area and I fed the fish too.
I wasn't originally going to book this, as Angie and I had done something similar in 2002, but as everyone else had booked, so did I. It was the best decision, I had a fabulous day. Whilst on the way back I happened to mention that I was hoping to do a South American cruise in 2015. Both Yvonne and Linda said 'no you're not, your coming on another world cruise'. So that's that!! The temperature during the day reached 34 and even at 22:30 it was still 29.
We didn't arrive back until almost 6, so it was a race to shower and get changed for dinner, thank goodness it was a casual night. I watched the Headliners show in Carmens, it was called 'We Are The Champions' and was based on Queen songs. It was very good. Then no Syndicate Quiz, just an early night.
