Our hostel is located at Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street, but the area is more commonly refered to as Chinatown. Although our neighbourhood is situated only at the border of Chinatown, the influence of Chinese culture is huge. Some restaurants, herb and cd stores post their signs only in Chinese and it seems that the whole neighbourhood has gone nuts because of the Olympic Games. If you really concentrate, you can actually imagine being in Beijing here. Two countries at a walking distance, we love it!
Walking from our neighbourhood towards Eaton Center really feels like a trip to another country as you can feel the demographics changing. Percentage of East Asians drops from 95% to maybe 25% and buildings become bigger. Before the area of skyscrapers and big advertisement screens, we found a nice little place called Village Idiot Pub where we spent the evening. The atmosphere was relaxed and the menu was funny. For example under 'Gravies' there was only a text:
"Our idiot chef believes his fresh hand cut fries don't need gravy, but it doesnt' hurt to ask."
